  • For Activities and Competitions select from the Activity list below

Organizing activities and competitions is fun but sometimes you might want some inspiration. I've collected ideas and posted them in our activity lists below. What about a Jelly Bean Competition?

  • TIP: Keep an action list

Make a rough sketch of how the display will look like. Write down what materials and tools you will need. Create a time-line / checklist: This week copying and laminating - Next week: buy or beg materials - Two weeks: covering display boxes with matching paper - Three weeks: collect books matching the display....
  • TIP: Staple at an angle

Your job will be much easier when you hold the stapler at an angle. The staples will stick out a bit at one side - perfect to get hold of them with pliers and pull them out when you change displays.
  • TIP: Use a glue gun

Glue guns are the most fantastic tools when creating displays. You can attach all sorts of materials like hard plastic, metal, fabric and everything else you can think off. Be careful with your fingers (blow - blow) the glue is very hot and you easily get blisters
  • TIP: Create a 3D effect!

Create a 3D effect by hanging objects in front of the display board, like fish in a Sea Life display or lanterns in a Summer Reading display.
  • TIP: Don’t overdue it!

Too much text, images or books on display too close together distract the eye. Each object needs its own space. Think of a shop window that is more than full with appliances, you can’t distinguish one object from the other, while carefully placed objects attract the attention.

Christmas display (round tube)

Making a Christmas decoration can be very satisfactory. It makes the celebration much more personal (and less expensive) and you can use materials from previous years in a way they look totally new.  Have also a look at Christmas Wreath for another inexpensive and easy way to make a Christmas decoration.

What you need:

  • Hoop(s) (2 dollar shop, comes in a small package and needs to be assembled) or rubber tube or hose (approx. 1.5 cm) for drainage or irrigation (25 m for $8.00 at Mitre Ten or Hammer pink-hoopHardware shop)
  • Colored ribbon or paper
  • Tape
  • Christmas decorations (new or old ones from previous years)
  • Some green from trees (optional)

What to do:

Assemble the hoop to create a circle. If you use a rubber tube or hose: cut off the length needed.  Cut off another 10 cm and cut the little piece open with knife or scissors then push it over both ends of the first piece to make a circle. I used a  hoop from the 2 dollar shop and cut strips of used gold colored wrapping paper 3 cm wide to cover the hoop.

Making these displays took me 2 hours detail-apples-and-green-branchWrap the paper or ribbon around the circle and tape or staple it to the tube. Tie a ribbon to the hoop so that it can hang from the ceiling or on the wall. For decoration you can use anything from Christmas balls to green branches with red berries from your garden. I used silver decoration with a white dove to decorate the golden circle. Another idea emerged when my partner showed me some green branches with lovely red berries in our garden. Igreen-branch-with-red-eggs attached it to the hoop and added some little apples for decoration. To keep it really cheap but with some more preparation you can use blow out eggs and paint them. The two dollar shop had also some fantastic large Christmas bags (indeed 2 dollars) and with some of my own decoration it gave a totally different Christmas image.

The large glass vase with colored Christmas lights is soooo easy to create and has an instant impact.red-circle-with-envelopes You can also put some dry branches from last years pruning in the vase and decorate it with Christmas lights. Very stylish and easy to do….

The second hoop I wrapped in red paper and used some silvery and gold colored Christmas bags to adorn the hoop. As you can see: the list can go on forever. Whatever you hang into the hoop, it will look fantastic and a few hoops hanging from the ceiling with Christmas decorations in the same theme will make quite an impression.
